The Bear River Farmers and Artists market

The Market has opened for the 3rd season in Bear River. It has become the village’s showcase to promote locally grown goods, local artists and musicians.

On opening day there were plants for sale, tasty baked goods, fair trade Sissiboo Coffee, crunchy fresh lettuce, Sledding Hill lavender products and a wide variety of handmade pottery from Wild Rice Pottery, Red-handed Pottery, and Blue Fin Pottery. There were soaps, jewelry from Green Willow Studio, and photography from Gary Fraser. Bear River Bodger brought a yurt.
Local musicians George Sloane and Dan Lagan played and jammed for vendors and visitors who enjoyed the sun and high sparkling tide on Bear River. The trees offered soothing shade and dappled sunlight to all.

Volunteer and local resident Catherine Smith baked a delicious cake to share and set up a tent for children’s crafts.
 In the background, there was even more evidence of the community cooperation that is behind the success of the market and the waterfront park. Children played on the recently installed ½ pipe for skateboarders and sliders. This equipment was generously donated to the Bear River Board of Trade by the Annapolis Royal Recreation Department and reassembled on site by volunteers. Board of Trade Director Jon Welch coordinated this acquisition and has donated many hours to fine tuning the equipment.

Even 5 strong men had a tough time lifting part of the ramp into place.

Many thanks go out to market manager Ken Flett who continues to do a great job of recruiting local vendors and helping them to set up and tear down . Ken Flett and Jon Welch continue to work behind the scenes on making the Market another success for Bear River.

Thanks to Annapolis County Warden Reg Ritchie who arranged for an electrical hookup for use at the market.

And hats off to the volunteer who cut the grass and the Rebekah Hall who has offered use of their bathrooms for this market season. These random acts of kindness are a hallmark of village life.
