March 17 – Kejimkujik Mi’kmaw maple syrup festival

Parks Canada presents the Kejimkujik Mi’kmaw Maple Syrup Festival which will take place at Jim Charles Point from 9am-4pm. First Nations people, including the Mi’kmaq, were the first people to ever tap a maple tree. This tradition, which carried on for thousands of years, is being revived at Kejimkujik. 
               – A celebration of Mi’kmaw Maple Syrup Heritage –

9am – 12noon: Pancake Breakfast (Adults $5, Children 10 and under $4, children under 5 free – all proceeds in support of the North Queens Ground Search and Rescue)
9am: South Shore Opportunities Drumming Group presenting “Feast Song”
10am: Opening Ceremony, including a prayer and smudging by a Mi’kmaw elder, and Parka.
10:30am: Mi’kmaw legends about the creation of maple syrup
11am: Medicine Walk and Maple Tapping Demonstration
11am-1pm: Oxen wagon/sled rides (weather depending) every ½ hour
12noon-2pm: Kids activities including making talking sticks, playing “Waltes”, and rock painting
1pm-2pm: Medicine Walk and Maple Tapping Demonstration
2pm: Mi’kmaw legends about the creation of maple syrup and visitors can roast Bannock (traditional First Nations bread) over an open fire with traditional tea to drink
2:30pm: Scavenger hunt
2:30-4pm: Oxen wagon/sled rides (weather depending) every ½ hour
3pm-4pm: Musical entertainment

Parks Canada was pleased to work with the South Shore Opportunities Association and the North Queens Ground Search and Rescue to present this special event.
