Bear River Economic Development Society (BREDS)
Bear River Historical Society & Heritage Museum
The Society operates the local museum. Workshops are held throughout the year on genealogy and local history.

Bear River Volunteer Fire Department
The Bear River Volunteer Fire Department (BRFD) has twenty-nine (29) active firefighters, sixteen (16) associate members , and twelve (12) members of the Ladies Auxiliary. BRFD has one of the largest volunteer fire districts in Nova Scotia.
The BRFD responds to approximately eighty calls per year. These can include, but are not limited to, structure fires (homes and other buildings), motor vehicles (car fires and car accidents), grass fires, and medical first responses.

Oakdene Centre, formerly Bear River’s public school, has been managed by a volunteer group since 1995. The Board rents out classrooms in this beautiful building to small businesses, artists, craftspeople, as well as community, education, music and recreation groups.
